THE GOAL

During Fall 2023, I researched the current state of the self-checkout industry and developed a pitch for a checkout experience through the lens of entry-level luxury. I identified Erewhon—a luxury grocery store chain in California focused on micronutrients and holistic health—as an ideal client.

the SOLUTION

I created “a self-checkout that knows you,” designed to bring gratification to every stage of the grocery shopping experience—before, during, and after. As my final project, I presented Erewhon’s primary research alongside a mobile interface featuring a rewards system, real-time inventory-linked grocery lists, and machine learning–powered custom notifications. The mobile experience was paired with a kiosk stylized to match Erewhon’s branding and integrated biometric login and payment. This stakeholder engagement led to a 10-week contract position with Erewhon.

Users can view their past purchases and quickly add items to their grocery lists. These lists sync with the real-time inventory of their favorited Erewhon location, helping customers feel prepared and confident that the items they need will be in stock. If a product is unavailable, the app suggests a similar substitute to keep their shopping experience seamless.

When checking out in-store, customers can choose to check out as a guest or a member. Members have the option to add their palm scan during the self-checkout process or in the app, allowing for flexible privacy preferences. Member checkouts ensure that grocery trip summaries and rewards sync seamlessly with their account.

Once customers add their palm scan, they can pay seamlessly by simply scanning their palm. Based on the member’s saved payment options set up within the app, the self-checkout kiosk automatically charges their preferred method. With biometric payment, there’s no more awkward shuffle to find a card or pull out a phone—grocery shopping has never been this effortless.

I created a simulated grocery store environment to facilitate immersive user testing. Participants were invited to shop and interact with the interface, helping me refine a seamless biometric payment method and identify pain points users may face when adopting new technology.
